How We Started
From Friendship to Family
The story below was written by our original Redwood children to share how what started as a neighborhood pod group in the pandemic, quickly grew into Redwood Homeschool—a place that is more than just a school, its a family.
Once upon a time there was a bunch of houses in one neighborhood. The first house was Ella and Derin’s house. The second house was Atlas and Aksel’s house. The third house was Indi and Lucie’s house. The fourth house was Dylan’s house. All the kids from all of the houses came together to make a school with Kelsie and Eric, their teachers. They were one big school and one big family called Redwood Homeschool.
In the neighborhood where all these families lived, the kids sometimes would play together but didn’t know much about each other. Their moms knew each other from a long time ago so sometimes they would say hi on walks, play at each other’s houses or ride scooters together. But a lot of them didn’t go to the same school. Then one day a virus shut down all the schools and the kid’s parents had to find a new place for their kids to go. The moms started talking and heard that some parents were going to start a homeschool.
The parents thought it would be a good idea for the kids to have a place where they could play together so they came together to start Redwood Homeschool. Kelsie joined as the first teacher because she had been Atlas, Aksel, and Ella’s first teacher who took care of them. Eric came after because some of the kids missed him and the school needed one teacher to help keep everyone safe. All of the families and kids and teachers helped bring the school together.
When school started some of the kids felt shy because they didn’t know a lot about all the people that would be there. But when they learned more about everyone they really liked them. They played together, ate lunch together and helped each other a lot. Even when kids were hurt the other kids in the school would take care of them. Everyone felt happy and safe. After a while the kids realized that all the families had all come together and they said, “Wow, it kind of seems like we are a family!” So they decided to make Redwood a family too and now it feels like home.
